What a personal loan is
A personal loan is a borrowing arrangement in which a lender provides a defined amount of money and the borrower agrees to repay it under stated terms. The agreement normally sets out the amount borrowed, the interest rate or pricing method, the repayment schedule, fees, the loan term and what happens if payments are late.
Personal loans are commonly repaid in regular instalments. Depending on the market and lender, a loan may be unsecured or secured by an asset. The legal meaning of a personal or consumer loan is not identical in every country. Compare the actual contract and all its cost components rather than relying on a product name or headline rate.
How repayment works
Each scheduled payment can include repayment of principal, interest and, in some products, fees. With a typical level-payment, declining-balance loan, more of an early instalment can cover interest; later, more of the payment may reduce principal. The exact pattern depends on the product structure.
What to compare
- Total amount borrowed: the principal before interest and fees.
- APR or a locally defined cost measure: where disclosed, this helps compare specified interest and charges, but different national measures are not automatically interchangeable.
- Interest-rate type: fixed, variable or another pricing method.
- Term: a longer term can reduce the regular payment while increasing the time interest can accrue.
- Fees: origination, establishment, late-payment, account or early-repayment charges may apply.
- Eligibility: income, credit history, affordability and residency rules vary by lender and market.
Personal loans are not all identical
Two products with the same advertised rate can have different fees, terms, repayment flexibility or eligibility criteria. Product names are also not standardized globally. Always use the lender's current documentation for binding terms.
How NEXVORO uses the term
NEXVORO helps readers find and compare available financial product information. An individual listing does not mean that the lender has approved an application, that all current fees are shown or that the product is recommended. Confirm the terms directly with the provider.
