How banking supervision works in Algeria
Algeria's currency is the Algerian dinar (DZD). The Bank of Algeria has responsibilities for currency stability, payment systems and banking supervision. Under the country's monetary and banking framework, the Monetary and Banking Council sets requirements relating to bank authorisation, while the Banking Commission oversees compliance and may apply supervisory measures. Banks and other financial establishments should not be assumed to hold identical permissions.
Algeria also has regulatory provisions for guaranteeing eligible bank deposits, including a 2020 regulation on the deposit-guarantee system. The existence of the scheme does not establish that every balance, currency or type of financial contract is covered. Rules affecting foreign-currency holdings, transfers and withdrawals must be checked against the applicable account contract and current official requirements.
