Brunei Darussalam

Brunei has conventional and Islamic banks under BDCB supervision. Explore official licence checks and the currency arrangement with Singapore.

Brunei’s banks, Islamic finance and currency arrangements

Brunei Darussalam uses the Brunei dollar (BND). Its financial system includes conventional banks, Islamic banks, finance companies and payment providers. The Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) publishes a register of licensed entities, with separate categories for conventional and Islamic banking. A company offering money transfers or investments does not automatically hold a licence to accept bank deposits.

A distinctive feature of Brunei is the Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Singapore: the two monetary authorities and licensed banks exchange BND and Singapore dollars (SGD) at par under the agreement. The Singapore dollar is customary tender in Brunei, but that is not the same as saying it replaces the national legal currency. Retail transfers, conversion services and account contracts may still involve their own conditions.
