Bulgaria’s banks after joining the euro area

Bulgaria introduced the euro (EUR) on 1 January 2026, replacing the lev at the irrevocably fixed conversion rate of BGN 1.95583 for EUR 1. This is more than a change in banknote design: the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) joined the Eurosystem, while banking supervision now operates under the ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism alongside the BNB. The country has both domestic banks and branches of foreign institutions, and the legal entity behind an account determines which rules apply.

The Bulgarian Deposit Insurance Fund (BDIF) protects eligible deposits in participating banks subject to statutory conditions. A branch of a bank licensed in another EU country may instead be covered by its home-country guarantee scheme. This distinction matters more than the logo on a branch or an advertisement. Current account fees, savings terms and foreign-currency balances should be checked separately from the basic EUR denomination.
