Cambodia

Cambodia uses both the riel and US dollar in daily finance. Learn how bank licences, microfinance deposits and payment services differ.

Cambodia's banks, microfinance and two-currency market

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) supervises commercial and specialised banks, deposit-taking microfinance institutions and payment service institutions. These categories matter because a payment provider and a microfinance lender are not automatically authorised to offer the same deposit products as a commercial bank. The NBC publishes lists of regulated entities so customers can identify which permission a business actually holds.

The Cambodian riel (KHR) is the national currency, yet the US dollar is also widely used in transactions. The account currency therefore affects fees, exchange rates, repayment obligations and the value of funds when prices or income are denominated differently. The country's electronic-payment ecosystem includes services associated with the Bakong infrastructure, but participation in a payment system should not be confused with a deposit guarantee. NEXVORO currently has an institutional listing for Cambodia, not separately published financial products.
