China
The mainland Chinese banking system
Mainland China has large state-owned banking groups, joint-stock and city commercial banks, and institutions serving more specialised segments. Customers should distinguish the licensed bank, its branches and the digital service used to reach it. The renminbi, denominated in yuan (CNY), is the main national currency.
The People's Bank of China (PBC/PBOC) is responsible for monetary policy and aspects of the payment system. The National Financial Regulatory Administration (NFRA) supervises banking and insurance institutions, including financial consumer protection within its remit. Hong Kong operates under a separate financial framework, so information about a mainland institution should not be treated as applying automatically to a Hong Kong bank.
