Banks, cooperatives and deposit protection in Costa Rica

Costa Rica uses the colón (CRC), although some financial contracts may be denominated in other currencies. Its financial system includes state-owned and private banks, foreign-bank branches, finance companies and savings-and-credit cooperatives. The General Superintendency of Financial Entities (SUGEF) supervises a range of financial intermediaries, while the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) plays a central role in payment systems and administers the Deposit Guarantee Fund (FGD).

The FGD was established under Law 9816 and covers eligible deposits at contributing institutions, subject to its rules and exclusions. An institution can be supervised without every product qualifying for protection; the BCCR publishes lists of contributing entities and information on covered products. Costa Rica also uses SINPE Móvil for low-value transfers, which is a payment channel rather than an independent guarantee of an account balance. NEXVORO currently lists Costa Rican institutions without individually published financial products.
