Côte d'Ivoire
Banking in Côte d’Ivoire and the regional monetary union
Côte d’Ivoire uses the West African CFA franc (XOF) and participates in the West African Monetary Union (UMOA). The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) serves the member countries, while the UMOA Banking Commission has responsibilities for authorisation and supervision. This regional structure matters: a bank operating in Abidjan is subject to requirements that extend beyond national boundaries, but the legal identity of the local institution still needs to be checked.
Banks, decentralised financial systems and payment institutions serve different purposes. The region also has the FGDR-UMOA, a deposit guarantee and resolution fund for participating licensed credit institutions and decentralised financial systems. A mobile-money wallet or payment account should not automatically be described as a protected bank deposit. NEXVORO currently has institutional listings for Côte d’Ivoire, but no published individual financial products for the country.
