Banking in Croatia: euro accounts and national safeguards

Croatia adopted the euro (EUR) in January 2023. Its central bank, Hrvatska narodna banka (HNB), is part of the Eurosystem, and banking oversight is shared within the European Single Supervisory Mechanism. Licensed Croatian credit institutions operate alongside providers offering services from other EU countries. A payment application or an institution acting across borders should not automatically be assumed to be a Croatian deposit-taking bank.

Deposit insurance is managed by the Croatian Deposit Insurance Agency (HAOD). Its statutory system covers eligible depositors at credit institutions licensed in Croatia; the agency maintains information about participating institutions and the conditions of cover. For a Croatian bank operating a branch elsewhere in the EU, home-country membership remains relevant. The protection of money in a bank deposit must also be distinguished from safeguards for electronic-money and investment products.
