Czechia
Czechia has banks, building savings institutions and credit unions. Learn how their supervision and deposit protection differ from investment products.
Czech banking institutions and the CNB
Czechia has commercial banks, building savings banks and cooperative credit unions. Its national currency is the Czech koruna (CZK). EU banks also operate through local branches, so a physical presence in the country does not necessarily mean that the bank has a Czech-issued licence.
The Czech National Bank (CNB) supervises banks and a broad range of other financial-sector participants. The Financial Market Guarantee System protects eligible deposits at Czech banks, building savings banks and cooperative credit unions under the applicable rules. Protection for investment securities should not be confused with protection for bank account balances.
