Danish banks and mortgage-credit institutions play different roles. Learn how they are regulated and why deposit cover depends on the licensed institution.

Denmark's banks and mortgage-credit institutions

Denmark's financial system includes commercial and local banks as well as specialist mortgage-credit institutions known as realkredit institutions. Their activities differ: providing mortgage finance does not necessarily mean taking ordinary customer deposits. The Danish krone (DKK) is the country's currency.

The Danish Financial Supervisory Authority, Finanstilsynet, supervises banks, mortgage-credit institutions and other financial firms. Eligible deposits at Danish banks fall under Garantiformuen. A Danish branch of a bank authorised elsewhere in the EU will generally instead rely on the guarantee scheme of the bank's home state.
