Estonian banking: licensed banks and digital services
Estonia’s financial market serves residents and businesses through banks, branches of foreign banks, payment firms and other financial service providers. Digital access is common, but a mobile application or a familiar brand does not establish that its operator is a licensed deposit-taking bank. Estonia uses the euro (EUR), including for ordinary domestic banking and payments.
Finantsinspektsioon, the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority, oversees financial firms within its mandate and participates in European banking supervision. The Estonian Guarantee Fund, Tagatisfond, provides statutory protection for eligible deposits at covered credit institutions. Protection for an Estonian branch of a bank licensed in another EEA country can instead fall under that bank’s home-country guarantee scheme.
