France

France combines national banking oversight with euro-area supervision. Learn how ACPR and the ECB divide roles and why a bank account differs from a payment account.

Banking and financial supervision in France

France’s financial sector includes banks, specialist lenders, payment institutions and other regulated providers. The Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution (ACPR), linked to the Banque de France, supervises banking and insurance activities and works alongside the European Central Bank (ECB) under the euro-area supervision framework.

Significant banking groups are supervised directly at European level, while national authorities have a central role for other institutions. This means that the rules applicable to an ordinary bank account may differ from those for a payment account or an investment service. NEXVORO lists French institutions but currently has no published product offers for this country.
