Ghana's banks, specialised deposit takers and payments
Ghana uses the cedi (GHS). The Bank of Ghana (BoG) regulates banks and specialised deposit-taking institutions, including savings and loans companies, rural and community banks, and certain microfinance providers. These institutions differ in the business they may undertake. A company advertising a mobile payment service or digital loan is not necessarily licensed to accept ordinary customer deposits.
The Ghana Deposit Protection Corporation (GDPC) operates the deposit protection scheme for participating banks and specialised deposit-taking institutions licensed by the Bank of Ghana. Membership information is public, and members are expected to display a certificate. However, protection depends on the type of institution, the account and applicable exclusions. The growing use of mobile wallets makes it particularly important to distinguish electronic-money balances from deposit accounts. NEXVORO presently lists organisations in Ghana, not published offers for individual products.
