Gibraltar credit institutions and deposit guarantees
The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC) authorises and supervises credit institutions carrying on regulated banking activities in the territory. Accepting deposits requires the relevant permission, which can be checked against the regulator's public register. Gibraltar also has a Deposit Guarantee Scheme for eligible deposits with participating credit institutions; its coverage rules sit alongside, not inside, a bank's commercial account terms.
The Gibraltar pound (GIP) is the local currency, and accounts or transfers may also involve pound sterling (GBP) and other denominations. It is important to distinguish a Gibraltar-authorised bank from an overseas provider serving customers across borders. The Gibraltar compensation scheme is not automatically interchangeable with the UK's FSCS. The responsible banking entity and the jurisdiction of the deposit contract determine which questions to ask.
