Greece
Greek banks, supervision and the euro area
Greece uses the euro (EUR) and has a banking sector built around established banking groups, alongside certain cooperative credit institutions. Banks provide payment accounts and savings services under European and national rules. The name of a financial group alone does not show which licensed institution is responsible for a specific service.
The Bank of Greece carries out financial supervisory tasks within the European banking framework, in which the European Central Bank directly oversees significant banks. The Hellenic Deposit and Investment Guarantee Fund (TEKE) provides protection for eligible bank deposits and certain covered investment claims under separate statutory arrangements. Its scheme membership information helps clarify which institutions participate.
