Guernsey hosts local banks and branches of international groups. Learn how to verify licences and the local rules for eligible deposits.

Guernsey banks and a separate compensation scheme

The Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) licences banks operating in the Bailiwick and maintains a public list of regulated firms. Banking providers include locally incorporated institutions and branches of overseas groups. A familiar UK banking brand does not necessarily mean that the account is with the same legal entity as in Britain. The jurisdiction in which deposits are booked and the bank's legal structure both matter when assessing a customer's rights.

The Guernsey Banking Deposit Compensation Scheme (GBDCS) is a local arrangement administered by an independent board, separate from the GFSC. It can compensate qualifying depositors if an eligible Guernsey-licensed bank fails, subject to the scheme's conditions and exclusions. It should not be mistaken for automatic coverage under the UK's FSCS. Accounts may be denominated in pounds sterling (GBP) or other currencies, but account currency alone does not decide eligibility.
