Hong Kong

Hong Kong's banking sector includes several categories of authorised institutions. Learn how to identify licensed banks and check deposit protection.

Hong Kong banking and authorised institutions

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) oversees the banking system and maintains a register of authorised institutions, including licensed banks and restricted licence banks. Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), whose exchange rate is managed through a linked exchange rate system against the US dollar.

The Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS) protects eligible deposits placed with participating licensed banks. Not every institution or product qualifies: restricted licence banks and deposit-taking companies do not participate in the scheme, and structured deposits fall outside its protection. NEXVORO currently lists institutions in Hong Kong rather than individual banking product offers.
