Hungary
Hungarian banking and the role of the MNB
Hungary uses the forint (HUF), although banks may also offer accounts and services in foreign currencies. Retail banks operate alongside other authorised financial institutions, and the cost of using a forint account can differ substantially from that of an account for euro payments. Product labels should not be taken as a substitute for reading the currency and pricing terms.
The Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) is Hungary’s central bank and has financial-supervision and consumer-protection responsibilities. Eligible deposits at institutions within the national scheme are protected through the National Deposit Insurance Fund (OBA) according to its rules. A bank’s licence, whether it is operating as a domestic entity or branch, and the type of account all matter when determining protection.
