India's banking system spans public and private lenders, regional institutions and specialist banks. Understand their licences and deposit protection before choosing one.

Understanding India's different banking institutions

India's financial system includes public-sector and private commercial banks, foreign banks, regional rural banks and a cooperative banking sector. Specialised categories such as small finance banks and payments banks operate within distinct permissions. The term “bank” therefore does not mean that every licensed institution provides the same range of services.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has a central role in banking regulation. The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) insures eligible deposits held with covered banks. This protection must not be confused with investments in mutual funds or securities, or funds placed with non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), which are not insured bank deposits under the DICGC scheme.
