Banks, payment systems and regulators in Indonesia
Indonesia's financial sector includes commercial banks, regional institutions and Islamic banking providers. Mobile payments and QR-based transactions are widely used, but a bank, an electronic-money issuer and a digital lending platform are different kinds of businesses even when customers reach them through one application. The national currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR).
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) regulates and supervises banking. Bank Indonesia is responsible for monetary policy and payment systems. Lembaga Penjamin Simpanan (LPS), the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation, protects eligible bank deposits under its rules. Coverage depends on the institution and qualifying conditions; an e-wallet balance should not be assumed to be a bank deposit simply because funds can be stored in an app.
