Kenya

Kenya combines banks, microfinance and widely used digital payments. Learn how KDIC protection differs by institution and where to verify a provider.

Kenya's banking and microfinance landscape

Kenya uses the Kenyan shilling (KES). The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) licenses and supervises commercial banks, mortgage finance institutions and deposit-taking microfinance banks. These are different from many savings and credit co-operatives (SACCOs), which have their own regulatory arrangements. A customer's money may be held in a bank account, with a cooperative or through a payment service; the protections should not be treated as interchangeable.

The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) operates a deposit insurance scheme for its member institutions, including CBK-licensed banks and qualifying microfinance banks. KDIC explains that SACCO deposits and a range of investments, such as unit trusts and money-market funds, are not covered by its banking deposit-insurance scheme. A mobile-money service also does not become a KDIC-insured deposit merely because an app is popular. NEXVORO's Kenya page currently lists institutions without separately published products.
