South Korea has commercial, digital and savings banks. Understand who supervises them and why deposit protection can differ for cooperative institutions.

Financial supervision and bank types in South Korea

The Republic of Korea has major commercial banking groups, digital banks and specialised savings banks. Cooperative financial institutions also operate, but may use different arrangements to safeguard deposits. The national currency is the South Korean won (KRW), and similar-looking savings products should not be assumed to have identical legal status.

The Financial Services Commission (FSC) makes major regulatory and licensing decisions, while the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) carries out examinations and ongoing supervision. The Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) covers qualifying deposits and other eligible products at participating institutions. Some mutual-finance cooperatives have separate protection funds, so the word “savings” in a provider's name is not sufficient evidence of KDIC coverage.
