Kuwait’s banks and Central Bank supervision
The Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) is the national currency. Kuwait’s banking market includes conventional commercial banks, Islamic institutions and branches of foreign banks. The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) publishes distinct lists for conventional and Islamic Kuwaiti banks, making it possible to identify the actual institution rather than relying on a trading name or an advertising claim.
CBK rules govern the licensing and supervision of banks, including separate requirements for Islamic banks. The legal form of an account matters: conventional savings accounts and Sharia-compliant financing or investment arrangements may have different return calculations and risk disclosures. Before deciding how funds are held, consumers should check the relevant bank’s contract and any current statutory or contractual protection information.
