Malaysia

Malaysia has conventional and Islamic banks alongside growing digital services. Learn how PIDM deposit protection works and which balances require separate checks.

Conventional and Islamic banking in Malaysia

Malaysia's banking market brings together conventional groups, Islamic banks and digital finance services. A standard bank account, an Islamic deposit arrangement and an e-wallet are not the same legal product, even if customers use similar apps. The national currency is the Malaysian ringgit (MYR).

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) regulates and supervises banks, including Islamic banking institutions. Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (PIDM) provides protection for eligible deposits at member banks, with particular rules for conventional and Islamic deposits. Electronic money is not itself automatically a PIDM-insured bank deposit, even where a payment provider safeguards customer funds using bank accounts.
