Banking in Malta and the role of the MFSA
Malta uses the euro (EUR) and combines retail banking with financial firms that operate internationally. A company being registered or doing business in Malta does not, by itself, mean that it is authorised to accept customer deposits. The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) regulates banks and other licensed financial service providers within its mandate.
Malta has a Depositor Compensation Scheme for eligible depositors at covered banks, and a distinct Investor Compensation Scheme for certain claims against failed investment firms. These schemes address different risks and are not interchangeable. Coverage can also depend on whether an institution is incorporated in Malta or operates as a branch of a bank from another jurisdiction.
