Mauritius banking, non-bank finance and deposit insurance
The Bank of Mauritius (BoM) licenses and supervises banks and certain non-bank deposit-taking institutions. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) oversees major parts of the non-bank financial services and global business sectors. This division matters for customers: a licence for investment or corporate services does not by itself authorise the firm to accept bank deposits. BoM's licensee list and the FSC's licensing information answer different questions.
Mauritius has operated its Deposit Insurance Scheme (MDIS) since June 2024, with administration by the Mauritius Deposit Insurance Corporation (MDIC). It is designed to protect qualifying deposits held with member institutions under the relevant law, not every balance or financial investment offered by a firm in Mauritius. Bank accounts may use Mauritian rupees (MUR) or other currencies according to the institution's terms; the currency of the account is a separate issue from deposit insurance eligibility.
