Mexico

Mexico has banks, cooperatives and popular-finance institutions with different safeguards. Learn how to verify a licence and the applicable deposit scheme.

Mexican banks and different kinds of savings institutions

Mexico uses the Mexican peso (MXN). The financial sector includes banks, savings-and-loan cooperatives (SOCAPs), popular financial companies (SOFIPOs) and other supervised entities. The National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) maintains a register of supervised institutions and information about which organisations may accept deposits from the public. The type of licence matters: not every company using the word “finance” is a bank or is authorised to receive savings.

Deposit safeguards also differ by institution class. Mexico's Institute for the Protection of Bank Savings (IPAB) protects eligible deposits in participating banks. Separate arrangements apply to certain cooperative and popular-finance institutions through mechanisms such as FOCOOP and PROSOFIPO. The existence of a financial register entry does not establish that every investment, payment wallet or account is protected in the same way. NEXVORO presently lists an institution for Mexico, with no individually published products.
