Banking and protected deposits in New Zealand

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) is the country's currency. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has prudential responsibilities for banks and other regulated deposit takers, while the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) oversees many conduct and investment-related activities. Banks, building societies, credit unions and deposit-taking finance companies can offer different products and operate under distinct conditions; a familiar brand does not remove the need to identify the institution holding the money.

New Zealand's Depositor Compensation Scheme (DCS) began on 1 July 2025. It provides protection for eligible money in covered deposit accounts at participating deposit takers, including suitable transaction, savings and term deposits. It does not mean that shares, bonds or KiwiSaver investments are insured deposits, nor does every product from the same provider necessarily qualify. NEXVORO currently presents institutional information for New Zealand and has not published a separate set of financial product offers for this country.
