Oman’s banking system and a changing legal framework
Oman uses the Omani rial (OMR). Its financial sector includes conventional banks, Islamic banks and Islamic windows operated by other institutions. The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) oversees banking activities, and the Banking Law issued in 2025 modernised the legal framework for conventional, Islamic, digital and other forms of banking. The type of licensed institution and the contract both matter when assessing an account.
Oman has legislation and schemes addressing protection of qualifying bank deposits. CBO material distinguishes conventional deposit protection from arrangements designed for Islamic deposits and investment accounts, and the rules have been evolving. It is therefore unsafe to assume that every account or Sharia-compliant investment has the same cover. The latest official scheme conditions and the individual bank’s customer information should be checked.
