Qatar’s banking market and its regulatory jurisdictions
Qatar uses the Qatari riyal (QAR). Banks operating in the domestic market include conventional and Islamic institutions as well as certain foreign banks. The Qatar Central Bank (QCB) licenses and supervises financial activities under its jurisdiction. An important distinction is that firms operating within the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) may be subject to a different authorisation framework.
The Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA) maintains a public register of authorised financial firms and their permitted activities. Being registered or authorised in the QFC does not by itself mean that a company can offer an ordinary retail bank account to a resident of Qatar. The firm’s exact permissions, legal entity and customer category determine what services may be provided.
