Slovakia

Slovakia combines euro-area banks with specialist savings institutions. Explore NBS oversight and how to check deposit protection.

Slovakia’s banks and specialist savings institutions

Slovakia uses the euro (EUR) and belongs to the European banking union. Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) is the national supervisory authority within the Single Supervisory Mechanism, in which the ECB supervises significant institutions. Alongside universal banks, the Slovak market also includes specialist institutions associated with building savings (stavebné sporenie). Those arrangements may involve their own eligibility, saving periods and borrowing conditions rather than functioning like an unrestricted everyday deposit account.

The Slovak Deposit Protection Fund (Fond ochrany vkladov, FOV) protects legally eligible deposits in participating institutions. Banks established in another country and their branches can fall under foreign deposit-guarantee schemes. The key question is where the institution holding the deposit is licensed, not whether its brand is common in Slovakia. Money invested in securities should not be assumed to carry the same guarantee as a bank deposit.
