Slovenia
Slovenia’s banks, savings banks and euro payments
Slovenia uses the euro (EUR), and its banking sector includes banks and savings banks (hranilnice). Both can provide deposit services when properly authorised, but their business models and service ranges need not be identical. Banka Slovenije is the national central bank and a participant in European banking supervision. It also operates Slovenia’s deposit guarantee scheme, including the processes for paying covered depositors if a qualifying bank can no longer repay its deposits.
The scheme generally applies to eligible deposits held at banks and savings banks established in Slovenia. If a bank based in another EU country serves customers through a Slovenian branch, its deposits are usually protected by the home-country scheme instead. This does not mean those funds are unprotected; it means the relevant membership and information documents may differ. Deposit guarantees are also not a blanket protection for investment funds or other market-linked assets.
