Thailand has commercial banks and specialised state financial institutions. Learn why a bank's type and the currency of a deposit matter for protection.

Commercial and specialised financial institutions in Thailand

Thailand's financial system includes commercial banks, foreign bank operations and specialised financial institutions created for particular public-policy purposes. Their functions differ: a provider focused on housing or agricultural finance does not necessarily operate like a general retail bank. The country's currency is the Thai baht (THB).

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) helps supervise financial institutions, payment services and market conduct within its remit. The Deposit Protection Agency (DPA) administers protection for eligible deposits, with requirements concerning participating institutions and Thai-baht deposits. A state-linked institution or digital payment account should not automatically be assumed to receive identical protection.
