UAE banking and the distinction between regulators

The United Arab Emirates has domestic and foreign banks serving consumers and businesses. Conventional banking operates alongside Islamic banking, where contractual arrangements and returns may be structured differently from interest-based products. The country's national currency is the UAE dirham (AED).

The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) licenses and supervises banks and other institutions within its remit. Financial services conducted in or from the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), however, fall under a separate framework administered by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). Being incorporated in a financial zone does not itself mean a firm is authorised to provide banking services.
