US banks operate under different charters and regulators. Learn how the OCC and FDIC fit into the system and what to verify before trusting a financial institution.
Banks and financial oversight in the United States
The US banking system includes institutions with different charters and supervisors. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) charters and supervises national banks and federal savings associations; other banks operate under different federal or state frameworks.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures eligible deposits held with FDIC-insured banks. The protection depends on the insured bank, account ownership and deposit category; it does not extend to every financial product. NEXVORO lists published institution information without replacing verification of a bank’s current status.
