BVI banking permissions and deposit insurance
The British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (BVI FSC) licenses banking activities under the Banks and Trust Companies Act. The framework distinguishes banking permissions, including general and restricted classes of business. Banks appear alongside providers of financing and money services in the local financial landscape; these are not interchangeable licences. A person considering a deposit should confirm that the institution is actually authorised to accept it.
The Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation (VIDIC) provides protection for eligible deposits placed with member banks under the territory's own scheme. It is an operational deposit insurer that also plays a role in bank resolution. The BVI uses the US dollar (USD), but this does not make local deposit insurance the same as protection under the United States' FDIC. Currency denomination and the institution responsible for compensation are separate questions.
